Let’s be honest, He-Man does not feel all that 2021. The titular character is a muscle-head hero who dons a big sword but no shirt, speaks in one-liners, and offers up a masculine stoicism that isn’t toxic, per se, but is definitely steroidal. He calls himself “He-Man” for heaven’s sake. So, some 40 years later, does He-Man hold up? Yes, yes it does. And it doesn’t just take a reboot on Netflix from Kevin Smith to make it relevant. So dust off your ‘80s figurines and dive back into Masters of the Universe. Bring the kids. He-Man has much to teach them. This isn’t just nostalgia talking.

Spoiler alert: The old show and the 1987 movie are streaming for free (Not on Netflix!).
What Is Masters of the Universe: Revelation, Anyway?
He-Man and the Masters of the Universe is back in the form of a new Netflix show from Kevin Smith. Yes, the guy who brought you Clerks and Mallrats — and is famous for his opinions about everything about our shared childhoods — has taken-up He-Man’s sword and rebooted the power of Grayskull.
Well, not rebooted. Smith’s new series — Masters of the Universe: Revelation — is unique insofar as it’s not a reboot or re-imagining. Though the look of the series is a bit more modern, Netflix and Smith have gone on record saying this new show “is set up as the next episode in the legacy ‘80s animated series that aired from 1983-1985.”
Revelation hits Netflix on July 23, and Fatherly has seen these first five episodes. The stories are surprising and enthralling all at the same time. Here’s a quick guide to all things He-Man and The Masters of the Universe! You have the power! (Again) So here, all your questions about the new Netflix show, are answered. Plus, a tip for one episode of the old show you should watch to prep.

Here he is! Just as you remember him! This Conan the Barbarian knock-off was the best friend of so many kids in the 1980s. Is he smiling? Is he grimacing? Unclear!

David Chang’s Simple and Delicious Salmon Rice Bowl Recipe
Ingredients
- 4 cups of rice
- 1 tbsp salt
- 625g broth (Dave used Brodo’s seaweed mushroom broth, but you can use any broth of your choice – chicken, beef, veggie, dashi, or just plain water)
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 2 tbsp agave (can otherwise use honey, sugar, or maple syrup)
- 12oz king salmon (wild ideally, can be frozen and defrosted)
- 20g ginger, thinly sliced
- 1/2 an onion, thinly sliced
- 1 package of roasted nori, cut into strips (you can even get this at CVS)
- 1 tbsp sesame oil
Directions
- Slice your salmon into 1/4″ slices.
- Sprinkle plate of sliced salmon with salt and set aside. (This will help your salmon quickly cure.)
- Wash and prep your rice. Add your rice, broth, soy, and agave to a pot, and turn on medium high heat. Once it starts to boil (about 7 minutes in), turn your heat down to medium low and cover for about 10 minutes.
- Once most of the water is evaporated, take the pot off of heat.
- Top the rice with the sliced salmon, onion, and ginger, then drizzle with sesame oil. Finish with the strips of nori. Cover, and let it sit for 10 minutes.
- Tip: You can also make this in a rice cooker. Simply cook your rice, then, once it’s done, add the salmon, onion, ginger and sesame oil.
