Dear John,
Every day, women in the General Assembly are working to make North Carolina a better place to live, work, and raise a family.
In order to highlight these incredible legislators and the work they are doing, Lillian's List is launching a new series called #WomanCrushWednesday. Our first #WomanCrush is Senator Natalie Murdock!
FAST FACTS
Name: Natalie Murdock
District: 20 (Durham)
In office since: 2020
Key Committees: Agriculture, Energy, and Environment; Health and Human Services; Transportation
Previous job: Soil & Water Conservation District Supervisor
FEATURED BILL: NC MOMNIBUS ACT
Black women are more than twice [[link removed]] as likely to die from pregnancy-related issues than women of other races, according to the CDC. Maternal health outcomes in North Carolina particularly need to improve, as we currently rank 30th out of 50 states [[link removed]] in high maternal mortality rates.
That's why Senator Murdock, along with her colleagues Sens. Batch and Salvador, and Reps. von Haefen, Cunningham, Alston, and Hawkins introduced the North Carolina Momnibus Act [[link removed]] to the state legislature this April.
The Act seeks to address the social determinants of maternal health, implicit bias in healthcare professionals, and the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on maternal health, as well as establish grants for community-based programs working to address these issues.
The NC Momnibus Act will be critical in helping to close the stark racial disparities in maternal healthcare.
In solidarity,
Pia Nargundkar
