Dear John,
My name is Carol White. I joined Take Action in 2013 because I was eager to help get the word out on the new program that would provide affordable healthcare to tens of millions of Americans who before, were forced to ration it or go without it — the Affordable Care Act (a.k.a. Obamacare).
Having worked in the public health field for years, I saw the impact of a healthcare system controlled by a few greedy corporations, bankrupting families and causing needless suffering. I was ready to fight for something better.
Organizing around healthcare became even more personal when, a year after retirement, I was diagnosed on the same day with two kinds of cancer. For some families, that kind of diagnosis can mean bankruptcy. Thankfully, I was on Medicare. That experience only strengthened my conviction that we need Medicare for All.
With TakeAction, I’ve joined with Minnesotans across the state to demand quality, affordable care via MinnesotaCare. We rode the light rail together in the winter of 2013, listening to the stories of people who were uninsured and supporting them to sign up for MinnesotaCare.
For nearly a decade now, the visionaries at TakeAction have propelled me off the couch to keep fighting for economic, racial, and gender justice. The work we do together – to expand healthcare access, preserve our climate and transform public safety – will make this world a better one for my kids and grandkids.
