The effects of the June and July flooding on Detroiters and residents of Wayne and Washtenaw County have been horrendous.



I've been checking in with some residents in my district and there are those who just got their hot water tank fixed from the last flood that now have to get them fixed again. There are those whose cars are totaled from being flooded. There are those who have lost their furnace, deep freezers, washers, dryers, valuables, memories, and so much more. Some who have lost so much could not afford house insurance or do not have the financial ability to pay for repairs or new appliances. Many were still cleaning their basements from the last flood when Friday's flooding started.



It's devastating -- and it should not happen again.



We desperately need urgent action to invest in climate-resilient infrastructure and long-term policy solutions that move our communities forward. My team and I have been talking with colleagues, the executive branch, and various stakeholders to develop legislation. Stay tuned.



I will tell you one thing for sure -- people are rightfully angry at what has happened. 



This summer's floods have been yet another reminder that elections have consequences. Decades of disinvestment and not enough action on climate change wasn't an accident -- it's because of who has held power. While we work tirelessly on legislation to address climate resiliency, we must also build momentum toward victory in 2022.
