Today, July 15, your bank account probably looks a few hundred dollars fatter than usual. Give thanks to the expanded and transformed Child Tax Credit for that $300 a month you’ll see for the next six months, per kid aged zero to six ($250 a month per kid aged seven to 18). Sound like basic income? Well, it is. But don’t get too excited. For now, it takes a pandemic to get such a social safety net for parents to the shores of the U.S. There is a big lobbying effort to make this one stick and we can only imagine parents with newly padded wallets will agree. Not a parent? A fully-utilized tax credit program could cut child poverty by half. So there’s that.

Progressive Muscle Relaxation for Kids (And You)
Need everyone to chill out? Try this script on your kids. (And feel free to go through the motions yourself.)

1. “Think about your legs. You are in line to get on a big/huge rollercoaster at the amusement park. You need to stand up as tall as you possibly can to be able to ride the rollercoaster.
2. Here comes the lady to measure you and she needs to see if you can get on the ride. Stretch your legs as long as possible. Make your legs super long. Stretch, stretch, stretch. You are almost tall enough, but not quite there.
3. The lady walked away. Just Relax.
4. Wait, the lady will give you another chance. She’s going to re-measure you. Stand as tall as possible and stretch your legs. Keep stretching. Make your legs super long.
5. Stretch. Keep stretching. Make them long.
6. And relax.

Stubbornness intensifies depression in American men, something that’s become a pandemic (within a pandemic). Fortunately, finding a good therapist has never been easier. If not therapy, support groups can help you to quit relying on your kids for emotional support (because, really, that’s not going to end well for anyone).
