This past week, as Hurricane Elsa hit New York City, a Twitter user posted a clip of an individual wading through murky, waist-high water to get to the train at 157th Street. The clip went viral, and for good reason. Here’s a picture, in case you missed it:

Let’s be very clear: this flooding is happening because of decades of inaction from government leaders on climate change, and no “bipartisan infrastructure bill” is going to change that.

And the dam is breaking, literally and figuratively. In just the past few weeks, we’ve seen:

• The Gulf of Mexico literally on fire
• Severe droughts and wildfires in California
• Portland streetcar service suspended because of dangerous and unprecedented high temperatures

Without a Green New Deal, this will only get worse. If we don’t take immediate action on climate change, we’re looking at a future where major coastal cities are completely uninhabitable and millions around the world are forced from their homes. Truthfully, all our lives are on the line.

You might ask why Republicans and conservatives in my own party aren’t working around the clock to pass comprehensive climate change legislation. The truth is that many of their campaigns are bankrolled by fossil fuel corporations and other bad actors who have a vested interest in holding back progress.

These members are abandoning their duty to their constituents, period. I’m doing everything I can to take them to task so we can pass a Green New Deal - but I won’t be able to do that without your support. So I’m asking:

Can you make a contribution to my re-election campaign today to support me as I work to pass the Green New Deal and fight the climate crisis? The past few weeks have underscored what we already know: we can’t wait a minute longer to pass comprehensive climate change legislation.

Passing a Green New Deal will give us the opportunity to create millions of new jobs and save our communities from further devastation.

But we’re up against oil and fossil fuel executives and climate change deniers at every level of government who want to keep living in denial and pretending that our lives aren’t at stake. That’s why I need you by my side as I fight to pass a Green New Deal.
