Just yesterday, news broke that House Democrats in Texas are fleeing the state in order to stop Republicans from passing a massive voter suppression bill that targets Democratic voters—and particularly voters of color.

Think about how crazy that sounds. Lawmakers are being forced to leave their own home state to protect the most basic right in our democracy. 

This demonstrates just how hard we have to fight to stop Republican-controlled state legislatures from dismantling democracy.

Efforts by Republicans to pass voter suppression laws in Texas, and in states across the country proves they know that when more Americans vote, they lose.

The bottom line is that our democracy will not survive if Republicans get away with these attacks.

Just over a month ago, Texas House Democrats had to walk off the floor during the end of the legislative session to block Republicans from making it more difficult to vote by mail, banning drive-thru voting centers and making it easier for courts to overturn election results.

These laws represent a disturbing escalation in the Republican party's voter suppression tactics. 

All of these attacks are an attempt by Texas Republicans to use their super-majority to hang on to power that they know is getting weaker by the year.

Just 3 years ago, Beto O’Rourke was less than 3 percent away from winning a Senate seat and President Biden was only 6 percent behind Trump in the 2020 election – the closest margin in a Texas presidential race since 1996.

The governor of Texas called for this special legislative session because he knows that with false claims about widespread voter fraud he can use lies to make it harder for millions of Americans to vote.
