Ahead of the Tokyo Olympics just a few weeks away, U.S. Sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson was disqualified from competing by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) for cannabis use.

I’ve said it before — cannabis should be legalized. That goes for medical and recreational use, including for athletes in their private lives.

Cannabis is even legal for medical and recreational use in the state of Oregon, where the Olympic trials took place.

The USADA’s inclusion of cannabis as a prohibited substance is an outdated and restrictive rule. It is also a reminder of our country’s cruel, failed War on Drugs — especially since cannabis lacks any scientific evidence as a performance-enhancing substance or competitive advantage.

The Olympics offer the unique opportunity to showcase our best and brightest athletes once every four years. We should not let an outdated, misguided rule deprive deserving athletes of competing at the highest level.
