A Personal Message from Jasmine Beach-Ferrara

Friends,

When I tell people I’m a gay Christian minister running for Congress as a Democrat, I’m often met with a little skepticism -- it’s not what people expect. So I wanted to take a few minutes to share how my faith has shaped my life and my approach to politics.

My faith teaches me to find the stranger in the room and welcome them. It teaches me to meet people with empathy, to stand with those on the margins, and to love my neighbor -- and my opponent -- no matter who they are.

There are Republicans in Congress, like my opponent, who talk about faith a lot, yet have embraced hatred as part of their platform.

They vilify refugees seeking safety at our borders. They look the other way when members of their own party are accused of harming women. They distort the truth. And when they say “family values,” they don’t mean all families.

When I see our current representative promoting ideologies and policies that hurt members of our community, I know that’s just not who we are in Western North Carolina.

Who we actually are is what I experience every day and what makes me fundamentally hopeful -- people who lead their lives with kindness and dignity, who know how to love across the lines that often divide us, who don’t stop talking to each other when we disagree.

In today’s politics, there’s a tendency to rush to reductive judgments . That district is red or blue and it’ll never change, those voters believe X or Y and there’s no point having a conversation. Part of what I love about Western North Carolina is the way we upend expectations and how there’s always more going on than it may at first seem.

That’s why I’m running for Congress -- to work alongside people all across Western North Carolina to build the kind of campaign and politics that reflects who we truly are and what we are truly capable of. That’s how we move forward together. That’s what this campaign is all about.
