We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That, to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.

These are the words found in our Declaration of Independence, ratified 245 years ago today. This document outlined the principles our country was to be founded upon -- among which was the idea of a government by and for the people.

Today, America is the world's longest-standing democracy. Although imperfect and often falling short of the ideals laid out in the Declaration of Independence and Constitution, our democracy has survived.

But right now, we're seeing an attack on our democracy like never before.

On January 6, a violent insurrection, incited by the then-president and members of the Republican party, occurred at our nation's sacred symbol of democracy -- the Capitol building. In a rejection of a democratic peaceful transition of power, 147 members of Congress then voted to overturn the results of a free and fair election.

Our democracy is under attack, not from foreign adversaries, but from our own elected officials. Officials who took an oath of office to defend the Constitution. While Donald Trump may no longer be in the White House, the 147 members of the Treason Caucus remain in positions of power and their attacks on democracy have not stopped.

The simple fact remains that the Republican Party has time and time again proven themselves to be unfaithful stewards of our most cherished and previously inviolable democratic principles. In order to ensure our democracy's survival, we must hold these dangerous and radical officials accountable.

This Independence Day, we hope you join us in recommitting to the fight to defend our democracy.
