Today, the Supreme Court handed down a decision in Brnovich v. Democratic National Committee that has disastrous implications for the future of voting rights in the United States.

I’ll explain more about this decision in a moment, but first, I’d like to ask you to add your name to support the Judiciary Act, legislation that will expand the size of the Supreme Court.

The truth is that the Court’s conservative majority has dealt blow after blow to the foundations of our democracy — and this won’t stop until we add four seats to the Court to restore ideological balance.

Okay, here’s what’s going on.

In Arizona, more people vote by mail than vote in person — but many Arizonans of color, specifically Hispanic and indigenous people living in rural areas, don’t receive mail delivery to their homes and don’t live anywhere near a post office. It’s common for individuals in these communities to hand off their ballots to friends or ballot collection volunteers when Election Day comes around.

But in 2016, Arizona passed a bill making it illegal for anyone other than family members, caretakers, or postal workers to deliver ballots on a voter’s behalf.

Let’s not mince words: this law is an attempt to stop people of color from voting in Arizona. And the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold these blatant attempts at voter suppression in Brnovich v. Democratic National Committee won’t just hurt people in that state — it will also uphold local regulations that make it harder for Americans to vote all over the country.

Republicans in Congress know that maintaining and expanding the conservative majority on the Supreme Court is the easiest way to continue upholding racist voter suppression laws.

The only way we can fight back is to pass the Judiciary Act, which will expand the Supreme Court and save our democracy.
