DSA: Pittsburgh Democratic Socialists of America

Hello John,

We are one week away from our October organizing meeting -- a great opportunity to get more involved with the Pittsburgh Democratic Socialists of America! Join us as the entire chapter gathers for an enriching afternoon of food, camaraderie, and yes: organizing!

You can RSVP for our October Organizing meeting by clicking here!

Each of our committees and working groups will have a table setup where you can easily plug into the work of building Socialism locally. Below is just a partial list of organizing projects ready for your help:

Our Housing Committee is working diligently to elect Randall Taylor to Pittsburgh’s city council! Randall was a resident at Penn Plaza when greedy developers shamelessly collaborated with city officials to displace hundreds of longtime residents from their homes there. Randall led the fight against this gentrifying stain on our city’s dignity, and will be just as fierce an advocate for justice when victorious on November 5th. To win though, Randall Taylor needs your help! Click here for a full list of canvassing events! You can start canvassing any time, but if nothing else: please stop by the Housing Committee table on October 19th and tell them you’d like to help elect Randall Taylor!

We are partnering with the John Brown Gun Club -- an anti-racist, anti-fascist community defense organization -- for a “Gunshot Wound Response Training” and “A People’s Samhain” on Saturday, November 2nd! The response training will walk through what to do as a first-responder to gun violence. The People’s Samhain will be an opportunity to remember the dead while celebrating with the living, through eating, drinking, commemorating, ritual, and dancing. Be sure to stop by JBGC’s setup this Saturday for more details!

Our Socialist Feminist and Abolition + Anti-Imperialism committees are supporting a clothing drive (in conjunction with "A People's Samhain") for SisTersPGH -- a transgender centered drop-in space offering outreach, accurate transgender education, trans-inclusion training, advocacy, and emergency housing/shelter for transgender people of Pittsburgh. Please bring as many articles of women's winter clothing as possible to this organizing meeting, and stop by the SocFem table this Saturday to donate!

Again, this is just a partial list of organizing work that you can get involved with this Saturday! There will also be table setups for our Eco-Socialism, Communications, Elections and Pressure Campaigns, Labor, and Queer Socialism committees/working groups -- all of which are up to important and interesting things!

Paper membership is step one. Step two is attending a chapter-wide meeting and saying hello to the organizers who are already at it! Won’t you join us next Saturday afternoon?

And now, a bylaws-required notice from our Internal Elections Commission:

///

The Internal Elections Commission would like to announce the nomination of Dan Hanson for the empty Harassment and Grievance Officer position. Per our bylaws, the HGO nominations process includes a 30-day candidate vetting period, which begins with this announcement. Any members with concerns about comrade Hanson's candidacy may communicate them to the Coordinating Committee or the incumbent HGO, E Forney, in writing. If you choose to submit a concern, your identity will be kept confidential.

Nominations will also be opening for the three empty Member At-Large positions on our coordinating committee, and for the Membership Coordinator position currently filled by an interim officer. The nominations period for these positions will open and nomination petitions will be made available at the Organizing Meeting on October 19th. Elections for the Coordinating Committee positions and the Harassment and Grievance Officer will take place at the General Meeting on November 19th.

Our chapter depends first on its members, but leadership does an incredible amount behind the scenes to facilitate our work! Please consider stepping up and sharing your skills and time if you can, it will be deeply appreciated.

On behalf of the Internal Elections Commission,

Emerson O

Please consider participating in or donating to the 4K 4 Gaza Kids Walk, which is raising funds for the UNRWA and their efforts to help children in Gaza. The Trump administration suddenly pulled funding from this essential organization, which provides mental health services in the Gaza Strip, so every dollar you can give helps.

The next Abolition & Anti-Imperialism meeting will be Wednesday, October 23 from 6:45-9 pm at Porter Hall Room A22 at Carnegie Mellon University.

Interested in care work and family outreach, or a caregiver yourself? The Socialist Feminist Committee is hosting a free family event on Friday, October 18th, from 10:00am-4:00pm at Community Forge -- on a day Pittsburgh Public Schools have off for conferences. We’ll be offering free childcare during the work day, including a movie screening of Up!, activities related to the movie, and more!

If you want to get involved with the committee’s #ExposeFakeClinics campaign and reproductive rights work, reach out to [email protected]. Want PA to defund Real Alternatives and the fake anti-abortion clinics they support? Use this form to send a letter to your rep with just a few clicks!
