Hi friends,

My name is Meghann, and I’m writing to you today about my wife, Jasmine. (She is running for Congress against Madison Cawthorn and could use your support hitting her FEC fundraising goal.)

Jasmine and I met in 2004.

I had just moved to Asheville to play semi-pro soccer when one of my friends said she wanted to introduce me to someone. The three of us met at a pub and started to have a great conversation, but I couldn’t stay long. I had a job doing one-on-one soccer training sessions with a kid, and I had to zip over to training.

Believe me when I say that I gave that kid the workout of his life just so I could get back to the pub before Jasmine left!

When we started dating, we navigated issues familiar to any LGBTQ person or couple -- the daily choices about when and how to come out, the assessment of whether it was safe to hold hands in public. But we knew then and now that love is stronger than hate.

Four years later, we wanted to get married. We chose to have our ceremony in Asheville in front of our family and friends, even though our marriage was banned by law. It was where we had met and a place that was special to both of us. It is where we dreamed of creating a family and building our future together, no matter that the law did not recognize our family. It is home.

We got married on a beautiful August day in 2008. In the years that followed, we set out to make sure that LGBTQ people across the South could feel at home in their own hometowns.

Together, we organized a multi-state push for marriage equality at a time when many people said it was impossible. But Jasmine’s organization, the Campaign for Southern Equality, helped win marriage equality in North Carolina and Mississippi.

I’ve seen Jasmine’s organizing skills firsthand. I know that when she sets out to fix an injustice, she doesn’t stop until it's right. And she does it with people, working together not just to win, but to build relationships and community along the way.

Right now, she’s committed to delivering love, hope, and empathy to our district and to defeating extremist Madison Cawthorn. The decision to get into this race was a family decision, and this is a family campaign. It’s about fighting for the kind of politics and policies that embrace the ideals of love and empathy. It’s about creating a kind of politics where there’s room for everyone at the table.

I have no doubt that we are going to get this done together -- us as a family, and with all of you.

Right now, Jasmine is working hard to hit her FEC fundraising goal. That’s why I’m reaching out to you personally to ask if you’ll chip in $25 to make sure our campaign keeps up this incredible momentum ahead of our critical public fundraising report.
