Dear John,
Checking the archives, I realized that most of my emails to you have been about unending compounding crises – from oppressive policing in the Twin Cities, to the movement to stop Line 3, to the entrenched white supremacy that harms so many of us across Minnesota and beyond. It’s been a lot – and I’ve been taking time this week to move slowly, focusing on grounding and sustaining myself and my loved ones. It’s okay to be tired, and to rest.
Resting and caring for our bodies, hearts, and minds is so vital to this work. This week, I’ve cooked and eaten good food, spent time outside and with my loved ones, and am making time to read. Right now, I’m working through Harsha Walia’s Border & Rule and Michelle Zauner’s Crying in H Mart. They’re reminding me of bigger pictures – respectively; our global history and context, and my gratitude and love for my mom.

How are you grounding and sustaining yourself? If you’re at a loss, I can offer you some good news:
Last week, grassroots people power put rent stabilization on the ballot in St. Paul. Unexpected rent hikes have forced too many Black and Indigenous renters, and renters of color, to leave their homes and our community, become homeless, or live in unsafe or unaffordable housing. Organizing for policies that put people over property works, and this is a huge first step in building safer communities where everyone can live and thrive.

And our June 10th #StopLine3 action showed us that pressuring our elected officials works. Amy Klobuchar’s office responded immediately, letting us know that our message broke through loud and clear: our senator knows that inaction on this toxic pipeline is no longer acceptable. This is a small but important step in the right direction. Learn more about Senator Klobuchar’s response and how to keep pressuring her for greater action – because this fight is far from over, and is growing in urgency.

We care for ourselves and our communities by doing this work. Part of that requires rest and reflection, so we can show up with clarity and abundance, and trust that none of this will ever be done alone. Become a sustaining member, so we can fight the good long fight, together.

LINE 3 ACTION ALERT
Line 3 construction and police repression are escalating, and Indigenous leaders and water protectors are doubling down on their resistance. Now, more than ever, we’re all needed at the frontlines. Find courage, and bring your people with you to take direct action. Contact elected officials with the power to stop construction now and tell them to honor our treaties and protect our water and climate.
