John,
Today, the Senate will vote on the For the People Act, legislation to undo voter suppression and save American democracy.
I was proud to support the For the People Act when it passed in the House of Representatives earlier this year. If it gets through the Senate, this legislation will:
We need the For the People Act more than ever now, because Republicans have demonstrated over and over again that they won’t stop their attacks on our democracy.
In Arizona, the state legislature made it more difficult for individuals living in rural areas to cast mail in-ballots, a law that disproportionately hurt people of color.
In Florida, voters approved a referendum that would allow formerly incarcerated people to vote, only for the Republican-dominated state legislature to implement a glorified poll tax to circumvent the will of the voters. The list goes on.
The only solution is robust federal legislation that will strengthen voting rights - and that’s what the For the People Act will do. So I’m asking:
It’s outrageous that a major political party in the United States wants to prevent Americans from exercising their constitutional right to vote. But I’ll never stop fighting to save our democracy, and I’m proud to have you by my side in this fight.
Onward,
Mondaire
