Like you, we celebrated on Thursday when the Supreme Court upheld Obamacare for the third time in the last decade, and the level of relief we felt knowing that millions of Americans would still have health care in the midst of a global pandemic was palpable.

But make no mistake about it, the 6-3 majority conservative SCOTUS doesn't care about upholding President Obama's landmark legislation out of the goodness of their hearts, but they do care about looking stupid. And the wording of the plaintiffs suit, according to Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Thomas, was bogus at best and failed to properly show that the law actually harmed them.

In other words, we won this time because the plaintiffs didn't have the authority to sue, not because this far-right court views Obamacare as being constitutional.

It is likely only a matter of time before the court reverses its decision in this case and adopts the position laid out by Justice Alito in his dissenting opinion. Alito's view is that the bill's individual mandate is unconstitutional, cannot be severed from the rest of the law, and therefore invalidates the entire law.

That view has been largely adopted by lower courts and when it is eventually adopted, the nation's health care system will experience an earthquake, leaving 21 million additional individuals uninsured, according to The New York Times.

That is untenable. That's why we're stepping up our campaign to help bold progressives in districts across the country with the courage to pass Medicare For All.
