Never Again

John,

On June 19, 1865 -- the news of the Civil War ending finally reached Galveston, Texas and the last enslaved people were freed. Every year on this day, we celebrate Juneteenth to commemorate the end of the cruel and dehumanizing practice of slavery in the United States.

While we've made progress in the last 156 years, we're still grappling with white supremacy throughout our society -- even within our political system. We all remember the difference in response to the Black Lives Matter protesters versus the Capitol insurrectionists.

"A Mob and the Breach of Democracy: The Violent End of the Trump Era" -- The New York Times

Last summer, Black Lives Matter protesters were tear-gassed to make way for a Trump photo-op, and Trump repeatedly called protesters "thugs" and "terrorists." But as white supremacists stormed the Capitol, waving confederate flags -- Trump told the insurrectionists, "we love you, you're very special."

And it's not just Trump. To this day, we have white supremacists holding positions in our Congress. If we are ever going to live up to the promise of equality made in our Constitution, we cannot allow these white supremacists to remain in positions of power.

This Juneteenth, join us in not only celebrating the progress we've made, but recommit to rooting out white supremacy in our politics.

Thanks,
