Our children are at the center of increasing gun violence, racial division, stagnant wages, and an opioid epidemic. In low-income communities, kids often go to school hungry. How can we expect our kids to focus in math class when all they can think about is how badly their stomach hurts? Not only that, but more than 1.3 million students are either homeless or their families are facing housing insecurity. Think about the stress and trauma inflicted on these kids every single day. These experiences are far too normal for many children in this country. That’s why Tim’s plan for education includes increasing investments in mental health and trauma counseling and other social-emotional initiatives. There are too many forgotten communities across this country — but it is unacceptable for kids to be among them.
