Just six months ago, the nation witnessed the most dangerous attempt of voter disenfranchisement in the history of the United States.

Former president Donald Trump openly tried to overturn the 2020 results of the Electoral College. His efforts to undermine the election results were shameful and pathetic -- but his call to supporters to flock to DC and engage in a “wild” attack on the Capitol was unparalleled in American history.

Now -- inspired not just by Trump’s Big Lie but by a growing GOP insistence on making it harder for more Americans to vote -- there’s a right-wing, partisan effort in states across the country to squeeze people out of participation in our democracy.

Stopping these un-American efforts is of existential importance. We must protect the right to vote. And the best way to do so is by passing comprehensive federal voting rights legislation in Congress.

Yes, it's going to be tough to get this legislation passed. But as a civil rights attorney, a Senator, and an American -- I refuse to accept failure as a possibility.

Too many Republican-controlled state legislatures are messing with people’s ability to choose their local, state, and federal leaders. And we know why -- they can’t win people over with their policies, so they want to rig the rules instead.

Simply put, we have to be strong for protecting people’s right to vote not just because it’s the right thing to do and the cornerstone of our democracy, but because we are currently witnessing a major and ongoing attack on people’s right to vote.
