A CIVICALLY ENGAGED SUMMER

Summer is upon us and we're so excited to learn about all the openings of public spaces around us, coupled with the low COVID-19 positivity rates around the city. This means that the work of community groups in trying to help provide access to vulnerable populations, such as the elderly, undocumented, and limited English proficient populations is working! MCN is proud to partner with the Interfaith Public Health Network in getting vaccination education out in the Bronx.

MCN held its final quarterly Muslim Stakeholders Meeting on May 4th, 2021. The theme of the meeting focused on Mental Health Awareness in Muslim communities. We were so grateful to have an amazing line-up of speakers who truly debunked some of the myths and narratives our community carries around mental wellness.

Our advocacy work doesn't stop there. We still need to hear your voice on Resolution 1257 at the NYC City Council. This Resolution will help introduce training and resources to NYC public school teachers and students to deepen their understanding of NYC's diverse religious and ethnic minorities. Education is the first step to help ensure we can combat hate and bigotry in our communities.

We are also pleased to engage with our interfaith partners to bring you the Face 2 Faith Interfaith Mayoral Candidate Forum, on June 14th, 2021, hosted by NY1 anchor Errol Louis. As the NYC Mayoral and City Council elections loom near, hear from the candidates themselves on how they envision engaging the diverse faith communities of NYC.

Register for the event here:

We currently have over 140 signatories to our interfaith letter on the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. See our statement here and don't forget to add your name to the signatory list.

As we welcome the summer, MCN's youth program is running another season of our Social Justice Book Club. Encourage your children to engage with other youth on important issues facing our community. Be sure check out the dates below.

There are a lot more events we have in store for you. Check them out below. As always, we would be grateful for any support we can get from you to help build MCN into a strong institution for our adults and children.

With Gratitude,

As you may know, there is growing confusion about the tax exemption entitlement within Muslim communities. Many masjids in our community have not been getting the full benefits of tax exemption as 501C3 organizations due to the misunderstanding around the tax exemption qualifications. In addition, many masjids board members in our community are thinking of buying property to have as a house of worship. However, they may not know the best practices in property ownership.

Considering all this, MCN is collaborating with our partner, Bricks &Mortals, in hosting a workshop  which you will learn about:

  • tax exemption qualifications
  • best practices to buy a property for a house of worship
  • clergy exemptions
  • Leasehold condo agreements
