John,
Yesterday, Senator Joe Manchin wrote an op-ed explaining why he will vote against the For The People Act and will not do anything to end the filibuster. It might as well have been titled "Why I’ll vote to preserve Jim Crow."
From voting rights to LGBTQ+ equality, so many critical pieces of legislation are stalled in the Senate because Republicans are using the filibuster to hold Congress hostage.
I’ve long advocated for abolishing the filibuster, a relic of Jim Crow and a consistent impediment to progress. Today, I’m renewing that call — and I’m reaching out to ask if you’ll join me. So John:
Add your name if you agree: we must repeal the filibuster.
Joe Manchin parroted right-wing talking points and claimed that the filibuster was part of our Founders’ plan for checks and balances – but the filibuster has nothing to do with the Founders. In fact, the Founders specifically rejected the idea of requiring supermajority support for passing laws.
The truth is that Republicans will continue to block popular legislation over and over again until we abolish the filibuster. The For The People Act, among many other bills recently passed in the House, has bipartisan support among the American people — just not with GOP politicians and the billionaires who bankroll them.
Manchin didn’t even take issue with any of the provisions in the legislation. By dooming our democracy in the name of bipartisanship, Senator Manchin is betraying both.
Thank you, as always, for your support. Together we will defeat Jim Crow and save American democracy.
Onward,
Mondaire
