In 2018, we elected six EMILY's List women governors in Kansas, Maine, Michigan, New Mexico, Oregon, and Rhode Island. Yesterday, we endorsed Whitney Williams to join their ranks as governor of Montana.

As a sixth-generation Montanan, Whitney learned the value of public service from her mother, who led the state Senate as the first woman majority leader, and her father, who was Montana's longest serving congressman. She's running for governor to expand economic opportunity for all, protect public lands, and bring down health care costs.

Holding the governor's office is critical in states like Montana where Republicans have a lock on both chambers of the state legislature.

But Whitney's path to office will be challenging.

She may face Greg Gianforte, an extremist who actually assaulted a reporter when running for Congress in 2017.
