Happy Pride Month, John! 🌈🌈🌈
This Pride Month is my first as a member of Congress — something that, until recently, I never believed possible for me as an openly gay, Black man. This movement made that possible and made history.
During Pride, we celebrate how far the LGBTQ+ community has come, but we also remember the struggles it took to get here and the obstacles yet to be overcome.
Pride is a commemoration of the Stonewall Riots. In late June 1969, police conducted a raid at the Stonewall Inn — a bar that was one of the few safe havens for the LGBTQ+ community in New York City — and started arresting people for dressing in a way that wasn’t in alignment with gender norms. This was legal at the time. We would not have Pride today if not for heroes like Marsha P. Johnson, who fought back against the people conducting the raid.
Today, LGBTQ+ folks have freedoms that were unimaginable back then, but also still face many of the same issues. We can't mark Pride without addressing the crisis of violence against trans people in America.
The LGBTQ+ community also disproportionately has student debt and lacks health insurance, and it is still legal under federal law to be discriminated against on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.
So this Pride Month, as we proudly parade in the streets, may we also recommit to our fight for justice and equality for the whole LGBTQ+ community. None of us are free until we are all free to live and love how we choose. If you can afford to, please make a contribution to my re-election campaign, so I can keep up the fight in Congress for full LGBTQ+ equality.
Thank you for your ongoing support! 🌈🌈🌈
