Bodies at the Border

What to Know: The Border Patrol routinely finds bodies of migrants who crossed into the United States illegally.

The TPPF Take: These preventable tragedies will continue until we secure the southern border.

“The coyotes—the smugglers who lead them in—aren’t exactly concerned with the welfare of their clientele along the way,” writes TPPF’s Igor Magalhaes. “If the coyotes fear that law enforcement is closing in on them, or a migrant becomes sick or injured, they flee, leaving the migrants to fend for themselves. We must secure the border to protect these people.”

Dismissed!

What to Know: One analyst says states who just saw their lawsuit against the Trump tax cuts thrown out should consider an alternative—lower taxes.

The TPPF Take: The Trump tax cuts mean that low-tax states are no longer subsidizing high-tax state revenues.

“New York, California, and the rest of the high-tax states can cut taxes and spend less—or not,” says TPPF’s Chuck DeVore. “Either way, it’s their choice in our federal system. That jobs and opportunity flow to those states where entrepreneurs, small business owners, and prudent risk takers can keep a little more of their money as they create jobs, is their choice too.”

The Civilized Against Civilization

What to Know: A new essay in City Journal points out that in recent years, it’s been the intellectuals who are standing against Western civilization—the system that made them elites in the first place.

The TPPF Take: It’s not just that students are no longer taught about Western civilization; they’re now being taught that it is the source of all evils (including slavery).

“If we allow ourselves to be persuaded that not only our past—and also our ‘national DNA’—is ruinously soiled by a sin for which there is no atoning, how can we expect our misinformed citizens to possess the confidence in their own principles that is required to defend individual liberty and limited government?” asks TPPF’s Tom Lindsay. “How can we expect them not to embrace the false, fatal promises of utopian regimes? That’s why we must strengthen civics education.”
