On Memorial Day, we remember those who paid the ultimate price to protect our democracy, our values, and our freedom – and there are no words of gratitude powerful enough to acknowledge that sacrifice. Today we remember their lives and celebrate their service, and thank their families and their community for their sacrifices as well.

Memorial Day is always a special moment to remember our servicemembers and their courage and dedication to protecting the home we all love. And it’s also a reminder of the debt we owe to these men and women who risked everything to ensure we can all enjoy the freedoms we hold dear today.

I salute the memory of every fallen servicemember who believed our country was worth fighting for, and I give my heartfelt thanks to our Gold Star families and to the brave men and women who continue to defend our freedoms around the world. Let’s honor their sacrifice by living up to the unassailable values that have guided our nation through times of both war and peace.

And let's also take a moment to think about the veterans that come home – and do everything we can to give them the support they deserve.
