Supporters Step Up for NVFS' Strides for Stronger Families Challenge
More than 80 individuals and 150 donors raised nearly $ 50,000 during the first ever Strides for Stronger Families Virtual Fitness Challenge in support of the NVFS SERVE campus.
Typically, during this time of year NVFS hosts the beloved Strikes for Stronger Families Bowl-a-thon. The Bowl-a-thon is the largest annual fundraiser for the SERVE campus and was the final fundraising event NVFS held prior to the 2020 COVID shutdowns. We were worried about 2021, worried about the safety and health of our supporters and staff and, of course, the families that depend upon the services that NVFS' SERVE campus provides. Thus, Strides for Stronger Families was born.
Physical activity was tracked by our Strides participants using a virtual app, which raised funds supporting our Greater Prince William neighbors in need. Throughout the Challenge participants met fundraising efforts and health and wellness goals while bringing amazing energy, showing off their colorful sneakers and their furry walking buddies on our Facebook <[link removed]>and Twitter <[link removed]> channels!
It was truly heartening to see our neighbors and community sponsors <[link removed]> so willing to pivot in response to our 'new normal' as they embraced NVFS' Strides for Stronger Families Challenge.

First Ever NVFS Virtual Road to Indepedence Gala a Resounding Success Because of YOU!
On May 13th, NVFS and our community friends and supporters gathered for the first ever Virtual Road to Independence Gala <[link removed]>.
In a typical year, the NVFS gala brings together over 600 business and community leaders in-person to celebrate the accomplishments of NVFS and our program participants over the year and dream up what the future holds for our organization, together. As NVFS' largest annual fundraiser, the gala enables us to support more than 35,000 of our neighbors in need across Northern Virginia.
But how do you bring the magic of the in-person event to a virtual format?
A special program was created to celebrate the achievements of this unprecedented year and allowed our clients to share their personal journeys with us. We enjoyed highlighting some of our employees' unique perspectives in clips that not only gave an inside look at how NVFS programs operate, but also what inspires our work, and our response to the unplanned events of the past year.
And YOU responded.
More than 215 of you and your loved ones joined us for the virtual event, logging in from all over the country. You joined us in supporting our neighbors by giving through sponsorships <[link removed]>, appeals, and matches. You participated on social media and in the virtual versions of our donations, raffle, and of course, the silent auction.
YOU made sure that we reached our goal by raising more than $ 650,000!
Although this pandemic is quite unique and has changed many aspects of life, we are very grateful that the "new normal" still includes the generosity of our supporters and their recognition of the vital work NVFS does to support individuals and families in need in our community.
THANK YOU!

It's the CARE-ing Season
On the CARE-ing Community Conversation
On Thursday, May 20th, we held our first ever CARE-ing Community Conversation with the support of our sponsors <[link removed]>. This virtual event provided space for collaboration and idea-sharing among our business community. Although the virtual Conversation was new, it fit well into the spirit of our CARE Awards <[link removed]> events. For nearly 30 years the CARE Awards have recognized outstanding companies that proactively make our region a better place for everyone to live, work, and play.
Nearly 100 partipants shared their experiences and lent their voices to the CARE-ing Community Conversation, including Quincy Stephens of Volkswagen Group of America, who presented a keynote on VW's new equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives. It was also the perfect moment to bring together our dynamic business community as we got ready to launch the 2021 CARE Awards.
CARE Applications are Open!
Following the CARE-ing Community Conversation, the 2021 CARE Award Applications <[link removed]>opened. After an extraordinary year, we were excited to open applications to recognize and celebrate companies that are aligned with the mission of CARE.
Visit our website to learn more about the CARE Awards <[link removed]> and apply before midnight on June 21, 2021!
The CARE Report 2021
Throughout the last year, employers faced new challenges as they determined how to pivot business operations during a pandemic, support employees dealing with competing professional and personal duties, and confront issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion more intentionally within the workplace. We sought feedback from our CARE <[link removed]> community to learn how these challenges are being addressed —and where support and learnings were still needed.
The result is The CARE Report 2021 <[link removed]>: How Companies in our Region Responded to the COVID-19 Crisis and Beyond, compiled from information shared by 12 companies that have been recognized as CARE Award winners or as NVFS community partners. Our hope is that this report will offer some best practices and inspiration for those grappling with both the challenges and the opportunities that have resulted from an ever-changing environment, and will highlight some of the tactics being used by those who are working to navigate towards new and innovative solutions within their own businesses.
A special thank you to our longstanding volunteer and NVFS chamion, Margery Leveen Sher, who conducted interviews and compiled this report.
