Welcome to my May newsletter!

I was thrilled to see our wonderful local attractions, pubs and restaurants, outdoor venues, and shops open fully last week. Life is gradually returning to normal with the success of our vaccination programme, community testing and social distancing. I have had the pleasure of visiting some of our attractions here in North Oxfordshire this past week as we mark English Tourism Week.

English Tourism Week

To mark English Tourism Week, on Wednesday I participated in a roundtable discussion with my Oxfordshire Parliamentary colleagues and some of our local attractions, organised by Experience Oxfordshire. To bring the week to a close, I have spent today out visiting RAF Upper Heyford Heritage where the flying field has been designated as a conservation area and several buildings are now scheduled monuments.

I also visited Bicester Heritage and enjoyed a walk along to Oxfordshire Narrowboats on the canal. We all need to support our local tourist attractions in North Oxfordshire and show that we are here for culture in the months ahead.

Culture Recovery Fund

It has been great to see some of our local attractions benefit from the Culture Recovery Fund which has helped keep businesses afloat as they face unprecedented challenges. Last week I visited the Mill Arts Centre (recipients of both rounds of funding) to hear how they have been getting on.

I was lucky enough to be invited by one of my constituents to a performance of Abba Mania at the Shaftesbury Theatre in London which his entertainment company – another recipient of the Fund - helped stage. In the weeks ahead I will also be visiting OYAP Trust as well.

Great Wolf

Last week brought the news of the Planning Inspector’s decision to allow the Great Wolf appeal. It is deeply disappointing. I have always felt that the plans are completely inappropriate for Chesterton. Last week I spoke to Cllr Ian Corkin, Chesterton Parish Council and the Parishes Against Wolf group. East West Rail

Engagement continues as part of the consultation on options for the London Road crossing. I joined one of their public events a few weeks ago and am in the process of writing my response to submit before the 9^ June deadline. Further information can be found here ([link removed]) .

Virtual School Visits

As Education Visits resume – albeit online – I had the pleasure of speaking to students from Glory Farm Primary School and Dashwood Banbury Academy this week. It was a great opportunity for the children to learn more about Parliament and the work that I do. I was asked some really good questions, from electric scooters to the gender pay gap.

Great British Spring Clean 2021

I hate litter. It affects our wildlife and has a serious impact on our communities. Ever since I was first elected in 2015, I have been proud to champion the Great British Spring Clean – an annual event organised by Keep Britain Tidy. The great clean up returns this year from today, May 28, until the 13 June. I am already looking forward to doing my bit in the constituency. I hope others can be encouraged to do the same. National News

Easing Restrictions

On 17 May we moved into Stage 3 of our roadmap out of lockdown which saw some of our most-loved local attractions re-open.

Vaccine rollout continues to go well with over 60 million doses administered nationally. I urge you all to get the jab when you get the call. We all need to remain cautious and continue to be mindful of hands, face and space to make sure we can remain on track as we emerge from the pandemic.

Mental Health Awareness Week 2021

This month marked Mental Health Awareness Week 2021, a time where we were all able to reflect on our wellbeing. The past year has not been easy. So many have been feeling lonely, isolated, stressed or anxious because of the pandemic. It has been more important than ever to keep in touch with friends and family and talk about any problems we may be facing. Read more here ([link removed]) .

Women's Health Strategy

The Department of Health and Social Care is seeking your views to help inform the development of the Government’s Women’s Health Strategy. I encourage you all to participate by completing the public survey and sharing your thoughts. Everyone aged 16 and over is welcome to contribute. Click here to respond ([link removed]) .

Farming, Fish and Food

Animal Welfare (Sentience) Bill, Kept Animals Bill, and Animals Abroad Bill

I am thrilled that in this year’s Queen’s Speech the Government outlined ambitious plans to improve standards of animal welfare and eradicate cruel practices through an Action Plan for Animal Welfare and legislation. The Bills will solidify and enhance the UK’s position as a global leader in protecting animal welfare.
