Yesterday I cast my vote in support of an independent commission to investigate what led to the violent insurrection at the US Capitol earlier this year.

The bill passed with bipartisan support -- 35 Republican colleagues joined every Democrat. Yet Kevin McCarthy and Mitch McConnell are already scheming to block the commission to protect Donald Trump.

One thing is for certain: The events of January 6 must never be repeated.

We owe it to all those impacted -- including terrified members and staffers of BOTH parties, and the Capitol Police who died and those who continue to suffer as their sacrifice and heroism are denied -- to investigate what transpired that day.

Will you add your name to my petition calling on the US Senate to take up this bipartisan legislation and investigate January 6th? Only an independent commission will earn the trust of the American people and move our democracy forward.

Today's Republican Party continues to embrace a new policy: "if you speak the truth about the 2020 election or January 6th, you will suffer the consequences."

No matter how they spin it, Republicans in Congress spurred on and then did nothing about the armed insurrectionists storming the US Capitol. Now they refuse to investigate what happened or hold anyone accountable.
