John,
Earlier this week, the Supreme Court announced it would hear a case that could severely restrict abortion rights in this country — and result in Roe v. Wade being overturned. It’s the most direct threat to reproductive rights in more than 30 years.
This will be the first abortion case argued before the Supreme Court since Justice Amy Coney Barrett’s confirmation. The Court now has a 6-3, far-right supermajority that does not believe in a person’s right to choose.
It will take a miracle for the Supreme Court to rule in favor of abortion rights — unless we restore balance by expanding the Court.
Last month, I introduced the Judiciary Act of 2021, which would add 4 seats to the Supreme Court, immediately reversing the Republicans’ theft of the Court.
And before that, President Biden announced a commission to study expanding the Court and enacting other judicial reforms, such as term limits.
Expanding the Court through either executive or legislative action is possible — but doing neither leaves us in an untenable situation. Without expanding the Court, we risk losing abortion rights, voting rights, and our democracy itself. That’s not a risk worth taking.
Thank you for adding your voice.
Onward,
Mondaire
