Hello, there! I wanted to quickly introduce myself.

My name is Debbie Mucarsel-Powell and I’m the new Senior Advisor to Giffords!

I’m so excited for my new role at Giffords. Gun safety has never been so important or more urgent than right now and I am honored to work with Giffords to make more progress on commonsense gun safety reform.

I’ve dedicated my life to advocating for gun safety measures. I’m a former congresswoman and served as the Vice-Chair of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force. And I worked tirelessly in the House to pass universal background checks in 2019.

Unfortunately, when our bill got to the Senate, former Senate Majority Leader, MItch McConnell, left the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019 untouched on his desk for almost two years.

So now, I’m working with Giffords to make sure that a universal background checks bill finally gets signed into law. We’re closer than ever before, which is why I have to ask:

When I was 24 years old, my life was forever changed due to gun violence. My father didn’t have the chance to walk me down the aisle or meet my beautiful children, because his life was taken far too soon. This issue is personal for me, as I know it is for Gabby, too. I have so much admiration for Gabby and the work this organization has done to save lives from gun violence and change the conversation around gun safety in America.

I’m hoping you will join me to help save lives while I take on this new role. I’m thrilled to join Giffords and play a part in enacting change to make our communities safer.
