This week’s purging of Liz Cheney from Republican leadership—and the election of Elise Stefanik to take her place—may seem like a sideshow, but it honestly has me worried about the future of our Democracy.
I know that might sound dramatic, but hear me out. If Republicans are in the House majority in 2024, and a Democrat wins the presidency, Republicans could refuse to certify the results and select the president themselves.

By sidelining Cheney and other Republicans who dared to tell the truth about the 2020 election, they are getting rid of the more rational voices who may get in the way of their plans in 2024.
The only way to ensure democracy prevails is to control the majority of state delegations in the House, something that Democrats don’t have even though we’re in the majority now. We need to protect and expand the majority to stop the GOP—and rural districts are critical to those efforts.
