In a House Oversight and Reform Committee hearing this week, Republicans insisted that the events at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th should not be considered an "insurrection.”

Here’s how Rep. Andrew Clyde characterized the storming of the Capitol that lead to more than 140 injured and 5 dead:

"If you didn't know the footage was from January 6, you would actually think it was a normal tourist visit.”

A mob of pro-Trump rioters set on overthrowing the government were not mere tourists. The events on January 6th were not “orderly,” as Rep. Clyde claimed in his remarks.

This week was a sad one for our democracy.

Rep. Liz Cheney was punished by her fellow Republicans for acknowledging Joe Biden won the 2020 election and refusing to lie about former president Donald Trump’s role in instigating the insurrection. And then her colleagues on the House Oversight and Reform Committee downplayed the events of that terrible day.

The attack on our Capitol was one of the darkest days in our nation’s history – and the GOP continues to twist the facts surrounding the insurrection, refusing to take responsibility for their roles in inciting violence.

Conspiracies and lies have no place in our government, team.
