First bipartisan carbon pricing bill of 117th Congress introduced
Late last week, the first bipartisan carbon pricing bill of the current
Congress was introduced by Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA-01) and Rep.
Salud Carbajal (D-CA-24). Their bill, the MARKET CHOICE Act, would tax
carbon emissions starting at $35 a ton and use the revenue to pay for
infrastructure projects.
The bill, first introduced by former Republican Congressman Carlos
Curbelo in the 115th Congress, is another indication that carbon pricing
is picking up traction as Congress begins the process of drawing up
climate legislation.
"We are at a crossroads with regard to infrastructure and climate
change," Rep. Fitzpatrick said in a press release

. "Legislative action taken — or not taken — by this Congress on these
issues will be felt for generations."
Danny Richter, Citizens' Climate Lobby's VP for Government Affairs, said

, "The MARKET CHOICE Act joins several carbon pricing bills introduced
this Congress, and we thank Representatives Fitzpatrick and Carbajal for
their leadership in making sure the ideas in this bipartisan bill are
part of the discussion."

I n other news:
Ask for cosponsors May 19: CCL is making a special push next week to get
more cosponsors for the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act. If
your representative has not yet cosponsored the bill, write to them on
May 19 and ask them to sign on. CCL's online "Write to Congress" tool

will be modified just for that day to facilitate this campaign. Mark
your calendar for next Wednesday to email your representative.
Bridging the partisan divide: Finding common ground with people who see
the world differently can be a challenge, but Braver Angels helps to
work through those differences. CCL volunteer Davia Rivka wrote a
delightful blog

about a Braver Angels workshop she recently attended. "In the end, our
combined group of reds and blues identified seven values, eight concerns
and seven solutions upon which we all agreed." Sign up for the next

Have you considered making a stock donation?
Donating stock to Citizens' Climate Education (CCE) or Citizens' Climate
Lobby (CCL) is a great way to help advance our climate solutions work.
Our donors that give stock help fund robust programming to empower and
mobilize volunteers, including: tools that support grassroots
organizing; educational trainings, workshops and discussion groups;
research, guides and other key materials; conferences, events and more.
It's also a very tax-savvy way to maximize your impact.
A donation of appreciated stock avoids capital gains taxes, saving up to
40% of the appreciated value. That money can go straight to charities
like CCE or CCL. And if you're giving to tax-deductible CCE, this allows
you to claim a higher tax deduction than if you donate the proceeds of a
stock sale.
Furthermore, charitable stock donations are exempt from rules around
"cost-basis washing." This means you can repurchase the same stock at
fair market value on the same day to keep your long-term investment plan
on the right course.
For more information about making a gift of stock to CCE or CCL, check
out our website

. You can also contact our Development Team at
[email protected] or call our home office at 619-437-7142.
As every financial situation is different, we recommend seeking advice
from a financial advisor to discuss the terms surrounding your gift.
Thank you for all that you do to create a more livable world!
Media: Praise for the CCL approach
We often hear praise from congressional offices about our volunteers and
the CCL approach of respect and appreciation. People in the media are
taking note, too. In an editor's commentary about a series of essays CCL
volunteers wrote for the Daily Herald in the Chicago area, Jim Slusher
(shown left), deputy managing editor for opinion, wrote: "As with
virtually every encounter I have with the group, the op-ed and the
series evoke a tone of sustained and sincere respect. These are people
with a cause, and they fully appreciate the urgency of their mission,
yet they steadily -- yes, gallantly -- soldier forth with the aim of
changing policy by changing minds."
Read the commentary to get the full context of Jim's appreciation.

Hard work pays off on resolution: Persistence and patience are qualities
CCL advocates are known for, and that was clearly the case for several
volunteers in North Carolina. They spent 18 months getting the town of
Knightdale to pass a resolution calling on the state and federal
governments to act on climate and transition to a clean economy. Read
