--------------------------------------------------------------------------
John,
The Supreme Court just announced it will hear the first major abortion
case since Brett Kavanaugh was confirmed to the Supreme Court.
The case involves Louisiana's clinic shutdown law, which, if upheld, would
give states a road map for eliminating access to abortion by simply
shutting down almost every abortion clinic in the state. Just three years
ago, the Supreme Court ruled that these kinds of clinic shutdown laws were
an unconstitutional violation of abortion rights.
But that was before Brett Kavanaugh. Now, the court could reverse its 2016
Whole Woman's Health decision and allow states to effectively end abortion
by simply making it unavailable.
[ [link removed] ]This is the most dangerous moment for abortion rights since Roe v. Wade
was decided. Will you donate $15 to help launch our
all-hands-on-deck campaign to keep abortion accessible?
When Texas passed its clinic shutdown law in 2013, almost all of the
state's abortion providers were forced to close down. These kinds of laws,
sometimes called TRAP laws (Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers),
aim to shut down clinics by imposing a web of frivolous and burdensome
regulations, including rules on the width of hallways, the size of
closets, and admitting privileges at nearby hospitals — which are entirely
medically unnecessary and often impossible for many abortion providers to
adhere to.
If the Kavanaugh Supreme Court overrules the precedent of striking down
clinic shutdown laws, it will be a fatal blow to abortion access in at
least half the country.^1 Even more women will be forced to travel
incredible distances to access abortion care, and some women will not be
able to access care at all.
To save access to abortion, we need to pass the Women's Health Protection
Act, a bill in Congress to ensure that abortion rights and access are
protected from all sorts of anti-choice restrictions. We also need to keep
fighting state by state against new abortion bans and clinic shutdown
laws. And we need to organize massive protests at the Supreme Court when
the case is heard next year.
Above all, we must defeat Donald Trump in 2020 to end his stacking of the
courts with far-right ideologues. Will you donate to help fight back and
keep abortion accessible?
[ [link removed] ]Yes, I'll donate $15 to help stop Brett Kavanaugh from
ending access to safe and legal abortion.
Thank you for all you do for reproductive freedom,
Ilyse Hogue
