We don’t have to wait until Election Day to make a difference.
This Mother’s Day, as many mothers and caregivers are celebrating at home with loved ones, others are trapped behind bars, kept from their families and communities simply because they do not have enough money to pay bail.
That’s why we’re redirecting all donations received by our campaign today to National Bail Out [[link removed]] to support their goal of raising $500K to #FreeBlackMamas and caregivers who are imprisoned and cannot afford bail to reunite families.
NBO works to free as many Black mothers and caregivers as possible for Mother’s Day, while also providing employment opportunities for those they bail out and organizing with groups across the country to fight for bail reform and the end of pretrial detention.
The cruelty of the carceral system is egregious toward women. Since 1978, the number of women in New York’s prisons has increased fourfold, and the number of women in jails has doubled — and more than 67% of women in prison have children under 18 and were the sole caregivers prior to incarceration.

While 60 percent of our city’s population are women, it’s not designed to support the majority of us, especially Black and Brown mothers. As a single mother and survivor who has had to fight for her children to be treated fairly, ensuring our systems treat mothers with dignity is a major reason why Dianne fights as hard as she does. Together, we will build a true care economy, with free maternal healthcare, guaranteed housing for all, the end to cash bail, and decriminalizing nonviolent behavior that allows police to target women of color and rip them away from their children.
We must stop punishing and imprisoning women of color for being poor. With your help, we can reunite mothers with their families, then continue the fight to build real safe and secure communities and break down the carceral systems and structures that have been wielded for so long to oppress the Black community.
