Dear John,

Last Friday, the Yes 4 Minneapolis campaign delivered over 20,000 signatures to the City Clerk’s office, putting public safety for all of us on the ballot.

I’m grateful to members of our community who turned out in person in the middle of this pandemic to physically sign on for change that defends and celebrates Black lives. It was a huge first step in the right direction, and I’m amazed by the power of this moment (but I’m not surprised that we pulled it off).

Now more than ever, we have the opportunity to stand on the right side of history. We all have a role to play in our collective liberation.

My coworker Yolanda reminded us on Friday: “We are building towards a vision for safety that is all-inclusive - food safety, housing safety, safety in our schools, in our homes, in our lives.” We need to show up in this moment with holistic care and solidarity, because we are the ones who know what we need and how to build the future we deserve.

On Earth Day, I wrote to you about the ties between the militarization and police surveillance of Minneapolis, and the harassment and violence wielded against water protectors resisting the Line 3 pipeline in Northern Minnesota. But I don’t just want to think about our connections from a lens of oppression. We also need to think about our collective power, and what is possible.

The all-inclusive vision of safety that we’re building across Minnesota includes safe air, clean water and a just transition away from our fossil fuel economy.

Folks across the state are finding their roles in the fight to stop Line 3. Last week, we asked people to share stories about what calls them to action in pipeline resistance. They shared about the immorality and cruelty of violating treaty rights and the healthy, equitable futures they want for their children and grandchildren.

Our stories help us connect, give our movement energy and power, and disrupt the lie that a transition away from the fossil fuel economy is impossible. They remind us that our struggles are interconnected, invite people in, and help our movement grow.

Why do you want to stop Line 3? Our movement needs your voice. We all have a role to play, and we all have a story. Speaking up is the first, necessary step to imagine the world we need and deserve.

I can’t wait to hear from you,
