D.C. statehood would FINALLY give us the opportunity to enact progressive change -- but once again, Joe Manchin stands in our way.
Democrats could put an end to Mitch McConnell's obstruction, ensure comprehensive voter protections for all Americans, defend our democracy against attacks by insurrectionist Republicans, and in doing so, enfranchise hundreds of thousands of Black and Brown Americans who have been cut out from our democracy.
But Joe Manchin is trying to torpedo that effort -- justifying his undemocratic stance by citing a partisan memorandum from President Reagan's Justice Department on D.C. statehood. Last we checked, Joe Manchin gets his marching orders from the people of West Virginia, not the racist ideologies of former administrations.
