Dear allies,

Every year on May Day, also known as International Workers’ Day, we stand in solidarity with workers all over the country to demand that working families have access to fair wages, basic workplace rights and dignity on the job. This year too, we are uniting with workers to demand that state and federal legislators put their support behind policies that address systemic inequities and support the freedom to join together in unions. Join us tomorrow in Chelsea, MA at 2 p.m. to make your voices heard. More details below.

This Wednesday on Workers Memorial Day, along with MassCOSH and many others ([link removed]) , we mourned the loss of those workers who lost their lives while working on the job. We continue to lose working people due to COVID-19 and common workplace hazards. To bring an end to this, we must hold our employers accountable for providing a safe workplace and ensure that workers don’t suffer just because they choose to go to work.

As our children go back to school ([link removed]) and our businesses open up ([link removed]) , it is imperative that we take concrete action to put working people and families at the forefront of our recovery efforts. This week, the Biden administration also released the American Families Plan ([link removed]) and we are excited to see this administration's commitment to supporting families. We hope that the MA legislature will follow suit and ensure that our families and child care providers have what they need to recover from this pandemic.

Below you will find opportunities to engage and continue the fight on many issues that affect our communities. Please spread the word by sharing our Facebook ([link removed]-) posts as well as following and retweeting us on Twitter ([link removed]-) . You can sign up ([link removed]) to receive regular updates from CLU.
In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent economic collapse, our partners stepped up to aid the communities we live in and provide the much-needed assistance at a time of crisis. This year, we recognize their hard work, honor their contributions and salute their grit to help our communities heal and keep them moving forward. Buy tickets now ([link removed]) for our virtual 2021 Salt of the Earth Awards and fundraiser to celebrate their efforts.

Gig Employee Solidarity in MA
Gig workers like rideshare and delivery drivers — also called “on-demand workers” — play a growing and vital role in our state economy. Like all workers, they deserve basic protections including living wages, strong safety standards, and paid sick time.

Rideshare companies are doubling down on anti-worker policies in states across the country. In California, corporate special interest groups poured $200 million into passing Proposition 22, a ballot initiative that stripped gig workers of fundamental labor rights such as paid sick time, minimum wage laws, and more.

Now, Big Tech corporations are trying to bring their bad policies to Massachusetts. Visit our webpage ([link removed]) to learn more about our efforts to protect workers’ rights.

Pass the PRO Act. Pass the Wage Theft Prevention Act. Gig workers fight back.
Every year on May Day, we remember that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere — and we proudly stand united as working people. Join us on Saturday for a rally to bring power back into the hands of working-class people and to demand that our legislators take action and put workers first. This International Workers’ Day, we say #NoMore.

Action Alert: Flexible child care for MA residents NOW
The pandemic has exposed the inequalities in our state’s child care system. Low-income communities and communities of color have all disproportionately borne the brunt of the pandemic. With the American Rescue Plan funding, our leaders have a unique opportunity to match child tax credits offered by this funding and support our families and caregivers in need.

Join the Care That Works coalition to demand that our MA legislators fund flexible child care and provide much-needed financial support to our families. Sign the petition today! ([link removed])

Unemployment Resource
Before COVID, to get a child care voucher, low-income parents had to have a job or be in an education or training program. Now, you can get a child care voucher for up to 6 months while you look for a job, pursue an education, or training. View our flyer to learn more about this. ([link removed])

They will also cover the Partnership for Working Families' findings from two new reports: one that details the backroom corporate dealings that keep our communities living on the bare minimum, and another that explores deeper, more inclusive democratic processes to build power in our communities and counter this corporate and white supremacist agenda.
