Dear allies,

Every year on May Day, also known as International Workers’ Day, we stand in solidarity with workers all over the country to demand that working families have access to fair wages, basic workplace rights and dignity on the job. This year too, we are uniting with workers to demand that state and federal legislators put their support behind policies that address systemic inequities and support the freedom to join together in unions. Join us tomorrow in Chelsea, MA at 2 p.m. to make your voices heard. More details below.

This Wednesday on Workers Memorial Day, along with MassCOSH and many others ([link removed]) , we mourned the loss of those workers who lost their lives while working on the job. We continue to lose working people due to COVID-19 and common workplace hazards. To bring an end to this, we must hold our employers accountable for providing a safe workplace and ensure that workers don’t suffer just because they choose to go to work.

As our children go back to school ([link removed]) and our businesses open up ([link removed]) , it is imperative that we take concrete action to put working people and families at the forefront of our recovery efforts. This week, the Biden administration also released the American Families Plan ([link removed]) and we are excited to see this administration's commitment to supporting families. We hope that the MA legislature will follow suit and ensure that our families and child care providers have what they need to recover from this pandemic.

Gig Employee Solidarity in MA
Gig workers like rideshare and delivery drivers — also called “on-demand workers” — play a growing and vital role in our state economy. Like all workers, they deserve basic protections including living wages, strong safety standards, and paid sick time.

Rideshare companies are doubling down on anti-worker policies in states across the country. In California, corporate special interest groups poured $200 million into passing Proposition 22, a ballot initiative that stripped gig workers of fundamental labor rights such as paid sick time, minimum wage laws, and more.

Partnership for Working Families is hosting a panel discussion ([link removed][%7B%5C%22surface%5C%22%3A%5C%22share_link%5C%22%2C%5C%22mechanism%5C%22%3A%5C%22share_link%5C%22%2C%5C%22extra_data%5C%22%3A%7B%5C%22invite_link_id%5C%22%3A252189103007132%7D%7D]%22%7D) on how corporations amass political sway and how deeper democracy and participatory processes can build on current organizing practices to center our communities’ needs and build their leadership for the long term. They will also cover the Partnership for Working Families' findings from two new reports: one that details the backroom corporate dealings that keep our communities living on the bare minimum, and another that explores deeper, more inclusive democratic processes to build power in our communities and counter this corporate and white supremacist agenda.

Come learn about the Mass Renews Alliance's groundbreaking legislation at our May 5th Legislative Briefing. The Mass Renews Alliance (MARA) is a mammoth coalition of over 80 Massachusetts organizations united in advancing racial, social, and economic justice-focused intersectional climate policy. This session, MARA has written 3 bills that focus on housing and food justice: Building Justice with Jobs (S.2226/H.3365), Food Justice with Jobs (H.967/S.495), and Food Justice Frontline (H.973/S.564).
