** Celebrating Southern Colorado
------------------------------------------------------------

Today on the house floor we celebrated Southern Colorado. Representatives from the beautiful southern part of our state gathered at the well to deliver a resolution recognizing the importance of Southern Colorado. From Pueblo chilies to San Luis Potatoes we have so much to be grateful for. Many of you reading this reside in southern Colorado but for those of you who don’t I want to encourage you to visit. We are home to the Colorado State Fair and the Great Sand Dunes National Park. It’s not just our natural environment that’s amazing, it’s the people and the cultures that truly make Southern Colorado feel like home.

** Deregulate Meat Sales Direct To Consumers
------------------------------------------------------------

Today Governor Jarod Polis signed SB21-079 (Deregulate Meat Sales Direct To Consumers) into law. Now people will be able to sell shares of meat without undergoing licensure, regulation, or inspection as long as the consumer is informed before the sale. This is excellent news! This is a common practice in rural areas and now it’ll be easier for local ranchers to sell their product, and consumers will have more direct access to fresh and healthy meats. We worked tirelessly with stakeholders and community members to get this bill passed. I am so proud and humbled to have been a part of making this law!

** Rep. Donald Valdez’s Legislative Update
------------------------------------------------------------

HB21-1271:Department Of Local Affairs Innovative Affordable Housing Strategies ([link removed]) : This bill would establish a program that would distribute state funds to local governments to assist them in creating innovative affordable housing solutions. There is a desperate need for affordable housing across Colorado. If this program were created it would undoubtedly better the lives of Coloradans. The bill was just introduced into the House of Representatives

HB21-1278:Eligible Recipients For Final Disposition Expenses ([link removed]) : Current law does not include the definitions "public assistance" and "medical assistance" relating to death reimbursements for funeral, cremation, and burial expenses for deceased public assistance or medical assistance recipients. The bill adds the definitions "public assistance" and "medical assistance" to clarify who qualifies as a public assistance or medical assistance recipient. Current law authorizes death reimbursements for a person who has applied or was eligible for public benefits. The bill requires the person to be receiving the public benefits. I am a sponsor on this bill and it will soon be heard in the House Committee on State Affairs.

HB21-1290:Additional Funding For Just Transition ([link removed]) : This bill would increase funding for a just transition for coal transition workers and coal transition communities. Direct assistance for coal workers and their families along with investments in their communities is essential. As we move away from coal we have to make sure that those affected by the transition are adequately supported and have new job opportunities. This bill was just introduced and will soon be heard by the House Committee on Business Affairs and Labor.
