Hi friend --
AOC reminded us on Tuesday that the guilty verdict in the Derek Chauvin trial was accountability, not justice. Justice is not a guilty verdict in just one trial -- justice is George Floyd being able to go home to his family. Justice would be reforming a police system, an educational system, and a prison system that kills, injures, and oppresses Black and Brown people every day. Justice would be restructuring our society so that it values the lives of Black and Brown people.
That reform starts with Congress passing reform bills such as The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, but it doesn't end there. For us to truly address the systemic racism that plagues our society, we need to take a more holistic approach in our understanding of the needed reforms. And we need to remind Democrats that these issues are pervasive and need to stay at the forefront of our legislative agenda.
Help us keep the pressure on our Democratic leaders. Because according to a recent Axios News report, several Democratic lawmakers privately believe that a “guilty verdict in the Derek Chauvin trial has lessened pressure to act on police reform.” That is absolutely unacceptable. And it's why we're mounting a campaign that will pressure Congress to act on criminal justice reform -- immediately.
Friend, after millions of people like you stood up last year to march and let their voices be heard, we gained the momentum to make a real difference on these issues. We can't let our foot off the gas now. We're asking you to help us step up again and demand that Congress address issues of systemic racism with conviction, not to be placated by one guilty verdict.
