Earlier today, I testified in front of the House Judiciary Committee about voting rights and voter suppression in Texas.

Republican state legislators across the country, including right here in Texas with SB 7 and HB 6, are attacking this sacred right with Jim Crow-style legislation. We desperately need federal legislation to stop these voter suppression efforts.

That’s why I called on our elected leaders to pass a new voting rights act that will make it easier to vote. Will you add your name to mine to tell Congress to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act? This would help prevent racist voter suppression bills in states like Georgia and Texas from ever taking effect. [[link removed]]

Today, it was an immense privilege to carry on my mother’s legacy fighting for voting rights. Just under 50 years ago, she helped compile research and data for a congressional hearing on renewing the Voting Rights Act in front of the same committee.

For generations, Texas has been a testing ground for devious ways to restrict access to the polls. Since 2013, our state has cut more polling locations than any state in the nation. Our strict voter ID law permits firearm licenses to be used to vote but prohibits the use of student IDs.

More than ever, we need stronger federal protections that restore and revitalize the voting rights of our citizens. We need an updated Voting Rights Act to make good on the promise of the 15th Amendment — that no citizen be denied the right to vote based on race.

Voting rights shouldn’t be a partisan issue. For decades, Congress affirmed every part of the Voting Rights Act with near unanimity. We need them to act once again today.

Please sign my petition urging Congress to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. The right to vote is a cornerstone of our democracy, and we cannot delay action while Republicans try to grab power and pass racist voter suppression bills in states across the country. [[link removed]]
