Washington, DC’s residents contribute more to the federal budget via taxes than 22 states. But they have no say in how that money is spent by Congress. There are no good arguments against admitting Washington, DC as our 51st state and finally providing DC’s residents with the fundamental right of self-government. The opposition to providing statehood to a population that is nearly 50% Black is laced with racially-charged rhetoric. The subtext is that leaders of color are incapable of overseeing a state government. But momentum for statehood is building. Earlier this week, the Biden Administration issued its full support for our bill to admit Washington, DC as a state. It is the first time a sitting president has ever endorsed statehood.
