Hi there,
Last summer, the pain and anguish of the American people over the killing of Black people by police spilled out onto the streets. We demanded justice for the killing of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and the hundreds of others who lost their lives at the hands of law enforcement.
Yesterday, we finally saw some accountability when Derek Chauvin was convicted of murdering George Floyd.
And while I hope this verdict brought the Floyd family some measure of relief, there is no doubt that we have a lot of work to do in changing the ways police interact with those they are sworn to protect.
We need systemic change. And the Justice in Policing Act is the beginning of that work in Congress. It would bring much-needed reform to the way we police in America and would work to end systemic violence against Black Americans. It would demilitarize police forces, ban chokeholds, make lynching a federal crime, and so much more.
The House stepped up and met this issue head-on, and now it's time for the Senate to do its job and pass the bill as soon as possible so Joe Biden can sign it into law.
Will you add your name here and demand the Senate pass the Justice in Policing Act immediately so we can tackle the systemic changes we need to save lives?
While it is a good first step in ensuring that more Black Americans do not die at the hands of police, this bill will not fix everything. There is more left to accomplish to better invest in our communities, and I look forward to being a part of that fight.
