The Conviction of Derek Chauvin
Massachusetts Democrats Leading on Climate Action
President Biden’s Initial Actions to Reduce Gun Violence

The Conviction of Derek Chauvin
Yesterday’s guilty verdict in the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd is just one crucial step towards justice.
* This verdict is a step forward for accountability, but justice will not be served until Black communities do not live in fear of police officers sworn to protect them.
* In the names of George Floyd and the countless other Black lives taken by police officers, we must continue our work to eradicate institutional racism and systemic violence so that all are free to move through their communities safely.
* Let yesterday’s verdict be a catalyst for meaningful change. Republicans in the Senate should join Democrats to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, which will fundamentally transform policing in America as it addresses implicit biases and racial profiling, curbs police brutality, and enforces accountability.

Massachusetts Democrats Leading on Climate Action

This Earth Day, Massachusetts Democrats continue to lead statewide and nationally on climate action and environmental justice.
* Climate change is an existential threat that requires swift and bold action. Massachusetts Democrats are taking swift and bold action to ensure a more equitable, just, and livable future for us all.
* This week, Senator Ed Markey formally reintroduced the Green New Deal, legislation endorsed by Masachusetts Democrats at the State Convention.
+ The Green New Deal has revolutionized the way we talk about climate action. By investing in a green economy, we have the opportunity to create millions of good paying jobs.
+ The Green New Deal puts environmental justice at the center of the conversation because comprehensive climate action means delivering for communities on the front lines of the climate crisis.
* Democrats’ in the state legislature passed the Next Generation Roadmap, making Massachusetts a nationwide leader in climate action with some of the most ambitious carbon emissions targets in the country.
+ Baker tried to weaken the legislation to appease his wealthy friends and donors in the real estate industry, using Republican talking points to force a choice between the economy and climate action, when that’s exactly what the Democrats bill combines.
+ Democrats in the legislature didn’t back down ([link removed]) from their ambitious goals and duty to fight climate change, grow the economy, and promote environmental justice all at the same time.

President Biden’s Initial Actions to Reduce Gun Violence

Last week, President Biden outlined a series of initial steps to address the epidemic of gun violence, take on the NRA, and make our communities safe.
* President Biden has been dedicated to addressing our country’s epidemic of gun violence throughout his entire career. He has taken on and beaten the NRA twice, and we can do it again.
+ He won’t wait to take action that saves lives and make our communities safer – because tackling gun violence is one of his highest priorities.
+ Even when they don’t make the headlines, senseless gun tragedies take lives every day and leave lasting trauma in communities, especially communities of color. And recent high-profile mass shootings underscore the relentless nature of this epidemic.
+ The President is committed to taking action to reduce all forms of gun violence – community violence, mass shootings, domestic violence, and suicide by firearm.
* The Biden-Harris Administration announced the following six initial actions:
+ The Justice Department, within 30 days, will issue a proposed rule to help stop the proliferation of “ghost guns.”
+ The Justice Department, within 60 days, will issue a proposed rule to make clear that devices marketed as a stabilizing brace are subject to the National Firearms Act.
+ The Justice Department, within 60 days, will publish model “red flag” legislation for states.
+ The Justice Department will issue an annual report on firearms trafficking.
+ The administration is investing in substantive evidence-based community violence interventions – proven strategies for reducing gun violence in urban communities.
+ President Biden will nominate David Chipman to serve as Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
* From leading the fight in Congress to pass commonsense gun safety laws to spearheading the gun violence prevention task force in the wake of Sandy Hook, these actions build upon President Biden’s longstanding commitment and record.
* President Biden also continues to reiterate his calls for Congress to swiftly pass commonsense legislation to reduce gun violence supported by an overwhelming majority of the American people.
* Americans across the country agree that we need to take action to reduce gun violence, make our communities safer, and save lives. President Biden and his administration will continue doing everything in his power to address this public health epidemic.
