Derek Chauvin is a convicted murderer.

That’s great and welcome news. It’s a meaningful mark of justice for George Floyd’s family, friends, and community. It’s also a sign of progress on the issue of police accountability and a moment of hope for a future without police violence and brutality.

But the truth is, George Floyd should still be alive — and full justice won’t be realized until we take action to overhaul our public safety system so that other lives aren’t lost to police violence.

Let us be clear: the trial of Derek Chauvin is not a case of a few bad apples. The system itself is broken.

We need to reimagine public safety and pass legislation to end qualified immunity, enact a national use of force standard, demilitarize our police, create a database of officers who engage in misconduct, and fundamentally reduce our reliance on law enforcement in favor of investments in our community. These are just a few of the steps we can take to make progress on this issue.

We need elected leaders — from city hall to the halls of Congress — to show courage in this moment and fight to end police violence and overhaul our public safety system. The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act would be a big step in that direction. It’s time we eliminate the Jim Crow relic of the Senate filibuster and pass that legislation immediately.

Today I am happy for George Floyd’s family. Today they saw a small measure of justice for their loved one. It’s time we recommit ourselves to the work of fixing the broken system that took his life so that this doesn’t happen again.

RIP George Floyd.
