Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell must think he's still in the majority. He's blocking any meaningful legislation on voting rights, health care, climate change, and gun control. If we don't reform the filibuster, we'll have to beg the Senate Grim Reaper to allow our Democratic MAJORITY to pass critical bills. And we all know how that will turn out.
But we don't need Mitch's permission: Democrats can reform the filibuster immediately on their own.
Joe Biden wants to reform the filibuster. Chuck Schumer, Bernie Sanders, and Elizabeth Warren do too. Barack Obama has called the filibuster a “Jim Crow relic.” And AOC says it's “a cherished tool of segregationists.”
And yet even with all this momentum, Democratic Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema are all that stand in the way of ending the filibuster.
But there is something we can do: We can ramp up public pressure against Manchin and Sinema by placing ads in their states. We can make their obstruction so uncomfortable that they are forced to do the right thing.
While Manchin and Sinema use obstruction as leverage in D.C., we will turn up the heat in their home states. The voters of West Virginia and Arizona deserve to know why their Senators are blocking better health care and expanded voting rights. And you can make that happen.
