Friends, I wrote you a longer message about why I’m confident I can win against Madison Cawthorn. I’m asking you to chip in $25 to our people-powered campaign, and I want you to understand exactly where I’m coming from.

She’s never run before. She’s gay and North Carolina isn’t ready for that. She won’t be able to raise money.

When I first ran for office in 2016, I heard it all. I felt the calling to serve my community as a County Commissioner, but some local pundits were skeptical. They had already decided who I was and that I would lose.

But our team didn’t let it phase us. Instead, I knocked doors during snow storms and met neighbors from all walks of life. We connected over our shared values and our vision for what our community could be. These conversations became the foundation of my campaign.

We built community and support. We organized. We won.

And as I served my first term, I focused on how we move forward together. I worked to build strong relationships with the very folks who had been skeptical and with people across the aisle -- we found common ground and worked together to pass major policy initiatives. I believe that there’s just no time for rivalries and grudges in the politics of this era: too much is at stake and our community deserves leadership focused on results.

When I ran for re-election, I heard it all over again.

She can’t win in this new district. She can’t win support outside of Asheville. She won’t play it safe enough.

But we knocked doors, we listened closely as neighbors talked about issues from the opioid crisis to the need for rural broadband. We built community and support. We organized. We won. By double digits against a widely popular Republican opponent.

The lessons of these campaigns were powerful, and they are the same lessons I’m reminded of every day as a minister and organizer. Connect with people. Listen closely as they talk about their lives and beliefs. Share who you truly are and what you truly care about. Move forward together.

Now, as we grow this people-powered campaign of love, hope, and empathy for Western North Carolina, I’m hearing the same familiar refrains from pundits.

Folks, I’ve proven skeptics wrong for years by proceeding from one simple principle: the people of Western North Carolina want a leader they can trust to deliver real results.

I’m ready to earn support, organize, and win again. It starts right here: if I’ve earned your support, can I count on you to chip in $25 to our grassroots movement today?
