Eight years ago today, and just months after the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School, the U.S. Senate voted down an effort to expand background checks.

Do you remember how you felt that day?

The anger.

The pain.

The disappointment when 46 Senators looked at the most benign and practical solutions offered by moderates from both parties and then looked over their shoulder at the powerful, shadowy gun lobby and brought shame on themselves by choosing to do nothing.

Some of those who blocked this lifesaving legislation then are still in the Senate today. Some are even up for re-election. And they will have a chance to vote on background checks again once the Senate brings the new background checks bill to the floor.

And our job remains: either we must pass commonsense legislation to keep our communities safer from gun violence, or we must elect a Senate that will. So today, we are asking:

Can we count on you to make a $3 contribution to pass universal background checks? Do it today. Especially today. Send a message that we are in this together until the fight is won. [link removed]

Our democracy's history is littered with names we neither remember nor celebrate -- people who stood in the way of progress while protecting the powerful.

Eight years ago, a number of senators voted to join that list. Let's make sure that history does not repeat itself when background checks are brought to the Senate floor for another vote.
