The GOP has launched an egregious barrage of attacks aimed at trans Americans in recent years. From introducing discriminatory bills in 33 state legislatures to doing nothing in the face of disproportionate levels of violence against trans women and increased likelihood of discrimination in the workplace, trans Americans continue to face awful barriers in all aspects of their lives, and it is up to us to put a stop to that.
But former GOP governor Pat McCrory has announced his run for Richard Burr's North Carolina Senate seat, and if we don't hold him off, the impact on LGBTQ+ Americans will be devastating. For those who have forgotten, McCrory is the former Governor of North Carolina who in 2016 signed into law House Bill 2, the bathroom bill that sought to discriminate against those in the trans community simply for being who they are.
We can't sit by and watch Pat McCrory join the Senate. Democrats in the House narrowly passed the Equality Act earlier this year, a bill that will enshrine sweeping civil rights protections to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. But the Equality Act faces an uphill battle in the Senate, and that fight will be lost if Pat McCrory and his bigotry take Richard Burr's seat.
