[2]Dream Corps
Dear John,
Last Thursday, we hosted our first-ever State of JUSTICE Town Hall.
Many people from across the country tuned in as our National Director, Janos Marton, discussed the criminal justice system’s current state and the work Dream Corps JUSTICE is doing to combat these ongoing challenges.
We also heard from Five Mualimm-Ak, a leading activist that helped end solitary confinement in the state of New York, Nova Sweet, a directly impacted Empathy Network leader who’s transforming justice, and District Attorney Tori Verber Salazar, a groundbreaking Republican prosecutor who is helping to lead the fight for criminal justice reform in California.

Here are some clips from this month’s powerful virtual gathering:

On the Federal level, we’re focusing on bipartisan legislation like the “Smarter Sentencing Act”, which aims to eliminate mandatory minimum drug sentencing policies that have played a significant role in the explosion of the U.S. prison population, often leading to sentences that don't match the crime.
We’re also supporting the “Smarter Pretrial Detention For Drug Charges Act”, which aims to reduce the record-high levels of federal pretrial detention by allowing courts to choose whether pretrial detention is appropriate for each defendant charged with a nonviolent drug offense.
On the state level, Dream Corps JUSTICE is calling on the governors of Connecticut, Kentucky, Louisiana, and Oregon to alleviate the economic hardships placed on people who owe fines and fees with our “Fines & Fees” state campaigns. For many, the inability to cover the high cost of fines and fees while also trying to afford safe housing, transportation, utilities, and basic needs can lead to years—or even decades—of crippling debt.
Dream Corps JUSTICE is also fighting to protect the fundamental rights and dignity of all women behind bars with our “Dignity for Incarcerated Women” state campaigns. Since 2017, the Dignity for Incarcerated Women Campaign, led by formerly incarcerated women, has won improvements in living conditions for more than 30,000 women incarcerated in 12 states. Now we’re looking to bring these wins to North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Missouri by introducing similar Dignity bills in these states: [link removed]
Dream Corps JUSTICE has big plans for the rest of the year - and we need your help shaping our campaigns and policy priorities: from groundbreaking federal policies to transformational state campaigns, 2021 is the year to pass impactful reforms that will help thousands of people.
